Larry,
I'm sitting here going thru some old records of mine and guess which one I just found???
It's the one where you represented me in the grievance (many years ago, as a Labor Relations Specialist for the Maryland Classified Employees Association) when Maryland Chief District Court Judge Sweeney suspended me for 2 days without pay because I misspelled a name on a useless court document, to cover up for Charlie Schleigh's hit and run case.
Remember???
We had to go to Annapolis, Maryland for the hearing and, as you know, YOU won it for me and I got my money and had the charge removed from my file.
What a great guy you are, and believe me I will never forget all the times you came to my rescue when I was a State employee!!!
I still think you should run for President of the Maryland Classified Employees Association (MCEA) this year.
What are you waiting for???
We need you NOW!!!!

Eileen,
The copies of that old grievance and the newspaper clippings that you sent me have arrived in the mail, and I'm going to save (cherish) them with my handwritten personal journals.
I especially was moved by your trust in me, when you wrote to Joe Cook (former MCEA Director of Field Services), and told him that you demanded that your MCEA representation be "exclusively" by me.
Thank you so much for those wonderful memories and your friendship.

Yep, Jimmy is the good soul who inspired me.
Somehow, his signature phrase touched my heart with the essence of all of those who diligently do good in the background, without expecting anything in return for their mostly unnoticed efforts.

Did a google search for Mrs. Calabash, and Kumpster's blogspot (http://kumpster.blogspot.com) was the 6th entry on the list.
Also found this:
Randy in Ft. Worth said: "At the close of his act, Jimmy Durante would always say 'Goodnight Mrs. Calabash, wherever you are.' Who was Mrs. Calabash?"

I hope you are not holding your breath for an answer to this, because Durante never said and no one really knows.
I have heard many explanations -- all of which seem equally plausible.
It might have been a woman running a restaurant in Calabash, North Carolina, who served Durante when he was traveling through town. I have heard reference to a woman running a boarding house who gave Durante free room and board when he was not yet successful in vaudeville.
I would like to believe (as, I think, would most people) he was referring to his first wife, Jeanne Olsen, who died in 1943 after more than 20 years marriage.
